At the end of last year Flippa released a look back at 2011 in their infographic “State of the Website Economy”. If you didn’t see it (maybe you were busy with Christmas and New Year celebrations) then the infographic is displayed at the bottom of this post.
Before you have a look though, let’s have a quick look at some of the key point that can be learned from the infographic.
1) For starters, I was surprised to see that it was sites in the Sports niche that has been generating the highest premiums. While there is still money to be made in the Internet Marketing niche (which is evident when you see how many sites that have been listed and sold on Flippa within that niche over the last year), it turns out that they make the lowest premium at sale; just over 5 times the monthly earnings.
2) From the infographic it is apparent that people would rather pay more for a site that is monetized through advertising, rather than affiliate marketing (which came in second). These were then followed by subscription offers, and then basic ecommerce sites.
3) While the amount of revenue that a site makes is important, it seems to be that site usage has become a stronger influence in determining the value for pricing a website.
So there you have it. That was Flippa in 2011. It’s some useful information and you can read the full post here.
Anyway I hope that you have found it useful.
I’m off now to go and make a Sports site that is monetized through advertising :) (I’m sure I won’t be the only one!)
Happy Flipping
